BOY
ON THE LION THRONE: THE CHILDHOOD OF THE 14TH DALAI LAMA
Foreword by His Holiness the Dalai Lama.
Ages 10 and up. Roaring Brook Press/Macmillan. March, 2009

The Story: In 1937 monks
on a secret mission identify Lhamo Thondup as the 14th reincarnation
of Tibet’s most revered lama. From his simple life in a mountain
village to the thousand-roomed Potala Palace where he is worshipped
as a god-king, and his perilous escape into exile, this dramatic
narrative follows the remarkable childhood of the Dalai Lama, one
of the most loved and honored spiritual leaders in the world. The
160 page text is generously illustrated with historic black and
white photos. A portion of the proceeds of this book will be donated
to Tibet Aid (www.tibetaid.org).
The inspiration: No human being has
been more inspiring to me than the Dalai Lama. Writing this book
was a privileged opportunity to immerse myself in the world of Tibetan
Buddhism. I attended lectures by the Dalai Lama and went on Tibetan
meditation retreats to help prepare for writing this book. The publication
date of March, 2009 is also the 50th anniversary of the 1959 uprising
in Lhasa and the escape of His Holiness to India, where he still
resides today.
